Senior Tyler Kaman earned the team’s top score by finishing with a 159.

Billies Ready to tee off at State

December 7, 2017

Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ golf is heading to its first UIL Class 4A State Golf Tournament since 2014 after winning the 4A-Region IV championship.

The Billies roll into the state meet Monday and Tuesday, May 15-16, at Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort in Marble Falls.

“It was very exciting,” FHS head golf coach Janie Guynes said. “The team has worked diligently all season and they deserve to go. It was so exciting for them.”

Senior Katelyn Zuberbueler, junior Delaney Whitworth, sophomore Estella McMurrey and freshmen Allison James and Gracie Grona make up the Billies’ state-bound squad

“I’m pretty excited. Last year, we were pretty close to going, but we didn’t get to,” McMurrey said. “That would have cool but this year, we’re excited.”

Coming close

The Billies were in the hunt for one of the region’s three qualifying spots during the last two years, finishing seventh in a rain-shortened 2015 tournament and missing last year’s third spot by 16 strokes.

FHS’ five golfers combined for a score of 693 in this year’s regional tournament to win the title by 58 strokes over Pleasanton, a state qualifier in 2016.

“Last year, it was really upsetting not making state, especially since we were so close,” Zuberbueler said. “But this year, I’m super excited for my senior being able to do that and especially with a group of girls that we have. It’s been amazing this year.”

Realignment took two contenders out of the region, giving FHS a relatively easier path to state.

Regular state qualifier and current Region III champion Lampasas moved out of Region IV after the new round of realignment, moving a tough opponent out of the Billies’ path.

Salado, which qualified for state this year, also moved from Region IV to Region III.

Steady guidance

FHS will have only one golfer with state experience playing in Marble Falls, but her seniority has helped lead the young golfers this season.

“I really think that they work well together,” Guynes said. “Katelyn Zuberbueler is a fantastic leader. I think her leadership has guided them. We have two freshmen on our team, so it’s taken a lot of leadership from Katelyn.
